WEB SITE DEVELOPMENT

Sep 7, 2013 at 10:31 PM
The activity associated with development of a software parts library
for the development of a web-site will be presented here. This will be
an extension of the library used to prepare Programmable Software
Development Environment manual.

This effort was started a long time ago following the development of
the manual software parts library. Its purpose was to eliminate the
need for Front Page. It was subsequently put on hold so that other
more important efforts could proceed.

Mr. Mike is a long time professional friend of mine who has recently
offered to reconstruct my Web-Site. I told him my plan to use my tool
to rebuild my site. He has had difficulties relating to my technology
(It is quite different than normal programming methods) and I am not
really skilled in Web-site design. We both felt that this might a great
opportunity to make the technical connection.

SATURDAY: 2013/09/07

STATUS: I found the set of files that I used to experiment with the
layout of the web-page. To accomplish this task, I used the "frame" set
of commands and informed Mr. Mike of the status.

MR_MIKE_CONTRIBUTION: Mr. Mike indicated the these commands were
obsolete. He recommended the "div" tag command set.

RESULTS: I examined my references and found that "div" tag command set
was very complex. I suggested to Mr. Mike that I would continue using
to "frame" command set and when I got a collection of software parts
designed, he could convert them / help me to convert them to the "div"
tag command set. He thought this was a good idea.

NEXT TASK: I would restart my experiment with the format of the
web-page and send it to Mr. Mike when I complete it.

TUESDAY: 2013/09/10

STATUS: I have completed a sample web-site page which I will be using to develop the associated software parts library. I sent a copy of this sample to Mr. Mike.

DETAIL: I am currently using the FRAMES instruction set because I am familiar with them. I understand that there are many disadvantages in using them. However, I currently believe that I can develop the software parts library that defines my standards relative to web design and then update these parts with the new technology. It is also my hope that Mr. Mike will be able make these modifications and thus become familiar with the associated design methodology.

RESULTS: The FRAME instruction set requires the contents of each frame (framset command) to be defined by a separate *.html file. The NOFRAMES command which is needed to permit operation on browsers that do not recognize frameset requires the contents to be specifically written in the same file. These can be easily accomplished using the Programmable Software Development Environment postoffice commands.

MY NEXT TASK: My next task will be to prepare the required software parts to write each line in the html file. I will be using the basic output library and will be able to certify that the *.html file has been prepared with these standard methods, has not been modified, and has not been illegally copied.

THURSDAY: 2013/09/12

STATUS: The preparation of the software parts associated with the HTML
Output library have been started. Specifically, the _HTML_OUT_CONSTRUCT
and _HTML_OUT_DESTROY parts have been preliminarily prepared.

MR_MIKE_CONTRIBUTION: I received Mr. Mike's reconstruction of my first
web-site page. It is nice looking and easy to read. The code that he
used to make this page is still unfamiliar to me. Questions will be
asked and reported at the appropriate times.

DETAIL: The basic certification capabilities of the Basic Output
Library will be enhanced by a running pseudo-random parity bit. The
key to the random generator will entered as the first parameter of the
_HTML_OUT_CONSTRUCT software part. This parity bit, the source line
number, and the date will be included as a comment at the beginning of
each line.

MY NEXT TASK: The preliminary preparation of the file setup software
parts will be the next HTML Output library task. Also, a detailed
examination of Mr. Mike's source code will begin.

STATUS: The file setup software parts, _HTML_OUT_BEGIN_SETUP,
_HTML_OUT_ADD_FILE, and _HTML_OUT_END_SETUP have been preliminarily
prepared. I have asked Mr. Mike to add some informative comments into
his web-site code.

DETAIL: The random generator seed is modified by the file Alias name
and extent. Every time that a file is entered, a sequence of random
numbers are generated. These random numbers, the file Alias and extent
are used to re-seed the generator. In this manner, resultant random
generator will be uniquely defined from the sequence of
_HTML_OUT_ADD_FILE commands.

NEXT TASK: The preparation of the _HTML_OUT_LINE will be prepared next.

SATURDAY: 2013/09/28

STATUS: With the help of Mr. Mike, I have began to make a software
parts development plan.

MR_MIKE_CONTRIBUTION: Mr. Mike has helped me to find a base of
information from which I have been able to answer many of my questions.

DETAIL: One of the fundamental rules of this technology is to minimize
the amount of data that needs to be entered to build the web-site. for
example, the web site (www.whatifwe.com) and author's name appear in
the <head> sections for each of the web-site pages. In the software
parts library used to development the .html Programmable Software
Development Environment manual, there is set of parts that load these
common elements into a dictionary for use at a later time.

NEXT TASK: The development of the software parts needed to load the
common elements into a dictionary will be started. The *.html code
needed to prepare web page <head> section will be prepared. The common
data for all of the web-pages will be included. Only the title will
need to be entered when preparing the individual pages.

DETAIL: Three software parts have been prepared. _WEBSITE_CSS_CONSTRUCT
and _WEBSITE_HTML_CONSTRUCT initializes writing / certifying process
for the associated files. _WEBSITE_DESTROY resets the system for the
next sub-task.

MY NEXT TASK: The development of the software parts associated with the
preparation of the .css files will be developed first. Currently, I
plan to write both the screen and print related files in the same
sub-task.

point from which I can prepare my beginning software parts development
effort.

DETAIL: I have started with a experimental file that only displays the
title along the top of the web-site display program (Firefox, Internet
Explorer).

RESULTS: The files that have been prepared are as follows:
_WEBSITE_SCREEN_STYLE_FILE, _WEBSITE_PRINT_STYLE_FILE,
_WEBSITE_HTML_PAGE_FILE, _WEBSITE_STYLE_BEGIN, _WEBSITE_STYLE_END,
_WEBSITE_HTML_BEGIN, _WEBSITE_HTML_END.

MR_MIKE_CONTRIBUTION:

FRIDAY: 2013/10/25

STATUS: My apologies for taking so long. I have been struggling with
relating the CSS statements with the HTML statements and now have
succeeded.

DETAIL: The development of a collection of software parts demands I
have a thorough understanding of each of the CSS statements and their
connection with the HTML statements. At a minimum, I need to be able to
give each part a descriptive name. My references were not as good as I
needed. Consequently, It took a considerable amount of time to find
these connections.

RESULTS: In order to prepare both the Print and Screen CSS file as the
same time, it will be necessary to use a script.

NEXT TASK: My next task will be to update the CSS output library as
necessary for the use of a script. The development of the web-site
library will be used as a test case.

STATUS: I have been considering the need for preparing a CSS file using
a script and have determined that this is only practical way of doing
it.

DETAIL: Two CSS files, one for the screen and the other for the print,
will be prepared at the same time. Many of the style definitions are
written into both files but not in the same order. Done properly, the
script will be essentially transparent to the Web site library.

MY NEXT TASK: The next step is to update the CSS Output library so that
it accesses the Basic Output library via a script.

STATUS: The software part, _WEBSITE_STYLE_LINK_COLORS, was successfully
integrated into the software parts library. A deficiency in the
management of colors was discovered.

DETAIL: Every color used in the preparation of the web-site is
specified by the _WEBSITE_COLOR_DEFINE software part. Each color used
is associated with a user-provided name. These names of these colors
will be used as required. At the present moment, I forgot to display an
error message when I used a color that was not defined.

MY NEXT TASK: My next task will be to upgrade my color management to
display an error message when a color specified was not defined by the

TUESDAY: 2013/12/24

STATUS: I have started to prepare the CSS parts needed to define the
group section. These parts include _WEBSITE_STYLE_GROUP_BEGIN and the
five margin defining commands _WEBSITE_STYLE_SCREEN_MARGIN_BEGIN,
_WEBSITE_STYLE_SCREEN_PRINT, _WEBSITE_STYLE_MARGIN_END
_WEBSITE_STYLE_MARGIN_LEFT_RIGHT, _WEBSITE_STYLE_MARGIN_TOP_BOTTOM.

DETAIL: The margin commands are defined as follows: 1)
_WEBSITE_STYLE_SCREEN_MARGIN_BEGIN starts the Margin specification, 2)
_WEBSITE_STYLE_SCREEN_PRINT completes the Screen margin definition and
starts the Printer margin specification, 3) _WEBSITE_STYLE_MARGIN_END
completes the margin definition. 4) _WEBSITE_STYLE_MARGIN_LEFT_RIGHT
defines the left and right edges of the margin, and 5)
_WEBSITE_STYLE_MARGIN_TOP_BOTTOM defines the top and bottom edges of
the margin.

RESULTS: The five margin commands need to upgraded so that the parts
that define the edges of the margin can be used in the definition of
the borders and padding.

MY NEXT TASK: The five margin commands will be upgraded as needed and
the commands required to define a border will be defined.

FRIDAY: 2014/02/28

STATUS: Two important questions came to life as I attempted to defined the necessary html software parts necessary to define a group section, particularly the baseline wholepage section.

DETAIL: Specifically, there are html like statements in the screen CSS files in one of Mr. Mikes's example and no html like statements in his other example. The other question is associated with the proper use of the class, id methods of identifying a section.

RESULTS: I created two set of web-pages files, one with the html statements in the CSS file and the other without any html statements. My experiments have suggested that there is no critical need to have html like statements in the screen CSS files. There was a difference in the size of the text which I curreently believe can be corrected elsewhere in the CSS file.

NEXT TASK: My next task will be to further experiment with the two sets of web-page files to confirm control of the size of the text can be controlled elsewhere in the screen CSS file. .

TUESDAY: 2014/03/04

STATUS: I have examine web-site developed by Mr. Mike and have found that all of the styles are defined specifically in the CSS file statements. There appeared to be no need to include html statements in the screen CSS file. An examination of the references that I obtained from the library seemed to confirm my evaluation.

DETAIL: The CSS file is a common style definition for the entire website which might consist of many pages. It appears that the html statements were included in the CSS file to take advantage this capability.

RESULTS: In the normal development process, the CSS file provides the designer with the capability of designing the style once and then using it for all of the web pages. The Programmable Software Development Environment provides two other means of defining common elements such as the style; namely, the Software part and the Post Office communication commands.

MY NEXT TASK: My current plan to modify the previously developed software parts to remove the html statements from the screen CSS file and include them in each of the html files using no more than two software parts.

SATURDAY: 2014/03/08

STATUS: I have moved the html statements from CSS software part _WEBSITE_STYLE_BEGIN to the html part _WEBSITE_HTML_BEGIN.

DETAIL: The name of the author is assumed to be the same for the entire web-site. It is still a parameter in the _WEBSITE_STYLE_BEGIN CSS part where it is loaded into a Post Office. It is then accessed in the _WEBSITE_HTML_BEGIN html software part.

NEXT TASK: The next task will modify the software parts of the CSS Group parts and the corresponding html parts.

DETAIL: The wholepage does not function unless it contains something.
The software parts have been defined to insert a line of text if there
is nothing else present. This facilitates the development process by
allowing the website to be developed one step at a time.

MY NEXT TASK: The next step is to start the software parts development
process associated with the the group pages. These pages contain

FRIDAY: 2014/07/11

STATUS: I delayed the preliminary development of the website group
section HTML software parts library due to a CSS problem; namely, the
generation of the CSS output files took a long time.

DETAIL: The CSS Output Files are generated using the script library.
This was needed because the CSS file commands are not nested (one
contained inside another) where the HTML file commands are. To maintain
strict format similarities, both input source files have a nested
format. The script library allows me to properly format the CSS files.
Unfortunately, this slows down the output file generation.

RESULTS: I re-examined the CSS output file library and found the script
was inefficiently used. I made the obvious modifications and the speed
of the process was considerably improved.

NEXT TASK: I will restart the preliminary development of the website
group section HTML software parts library.

TUESDAY: 2014/08/05

STATUS: While preparing a plan for the development of nested horizontal
group sections, I encountered a critical challenge. Specifically, there
are occasions where the material displayed on the screen is not to be
displayed on the printed output.

MR_MIKE_CONTRIBUTION: Mr. Mike's proposed revisions to my website
included a link and navigation section which were displayed on the
screen and not on the printed page. These sections are on the left side
of a nested horizontal group.

DETAIL: There is, of course, a CSS means of accomplishing this task. I
need to include this capability into the rigorous set of web-site
development parts of the CSS web-site development library.

MY NEXT TASK: My next task will be to identify the optimal means of
including this capability into the both the vertical groups and
horizontal groups.

WEDNESDAY: 2014/08/06

STATUS: I have examined the alternatives relative to controlling
whether the material displayed on the screen will be contained in the
printed output and have found an optimum solution.

DETAIL: The best place to control it is make the needed changes in the
group of software parts that define the padding, margin, borer, and
background. Specifically, two additional routines need to be added;
one for causing the material to be printed and the other to preventing
it. Minor modifications in the software parts defining the whole page
and the group sections will be required.

MY NEXT TASK: My next task will be to implement these changes.

FRIDAY: 2014/08/08

STATUS: The software parts for controlling whether the material
displayed on the screen will be contained in the printed output have
been prepared.

DETAIL: Four software parts were prepared: One turns on the printed
output, One turns off the printed output and the other two
conditionally print a line or a comment.

RESULTS: These four routines have only been prepared; they have not in
any way been tested.

NEXT TASK: The next step will be to modify the routines for defining
the margin to include this capability.

TUESDAY: 2014/08/12

STATUS: All of the CSS software parts that are associated with the
capability to the permit / deny printing a specific section have been
modified.

DETAIL: The routines modified define the margin, padding, borders,
background color, background picture, the whole page and the group
section. Some of these routines, specifically the ones defining a
border and a background picture have not been tested for functionally
as yet.

MY NEXT TASK: My next task will be to start the testing process
associated with this print/do not print capability in the routines
currently being used. Border definition and Background Picture routines
will be tested later.

STATUS: The print/do not print capability in the routines defining the
whole page and group sections has been tested and found to be
functional.

DETAIL: Functional testing is not equivalent to thorough testing. I am
using the the test project to accomplish this task. This will permit
me to thoroughly the software parts library at a later time.

NEXT TASK: I plan to functionally test the background picture and
border routines next.

FRIDAY: 2014/08/22

STATUS: I tested the existing background picture routines and found
that they functioned correctly. I also observed that I had not
prepared software parts that put the picture in the center of the
specified web-site section. I can not recall the reason why I had not
prepared these parts.

DETAIL: In my original design, I made the top-left corner the default
position of the picture. It would be easier to make the center the
default position and build two new software parts to specified the top
and left position.

NEXT TASK: The next step will be to modify the routines to include the
capability of placing the picture at the center of the specified
section.

MONDAY: 2014/09/01

STATUS: I started my horizontal group section CSS software parts
development process by making a plan.

DETAIL: I examined the existing group section software parts to find a
starting point. I was hoping that the new capability could be made
with a minor update of the original group section parts. Of particular
importance was the Print/No Print feature. Specifically, the Print/No
Print specification for either horizontal section group affects the CSS
code generated for the other one.

RESULTS: Three new software parts are needed: 1)
_WEBSITE_STYLE_HORIZ_GROUP_LEFT 2) _WEBSITE_STYLE_HORIZ_GROUP_CONT
(Interface between the Left and Right Group section), and
_WEBSITE_STYLE_HORIZ_GROUP_RIGHT. The existing software part
_WEBSITE_STYLE_GROUP_END can be modified to terminate the Horizontal
group section sequence.

MY NEXT TASK: My next task will be to start the preparation process.

WEDNESDAY: 2014/09/10

STATUS: The preparation of the Horizontal Group section CSS capability has been begun.

DETAIL: The Print/No Print software parts required major modifications. Specifically, 1) the capability of setting a Print/No Print state for more than one Section at a time, 2) communicating data from an earlier specification to a later specification, and 3) writing a Print File line for a NoPrint state are required.

RESULTS: The required modifications of Print/No Print software parts have been made. The modifications have been function tested with the existing WholePage and vertical Group section parts.

MY NEXT TASK: The development of the Horizontal Group section parts will be started.

FRIDAY: 2014/10/03

STATUS: I have examined the requirements of a header as presented in Mr. Mike's web-site contribution and have developed a basic plan.

DETAIL: Two important factors were important to the plan. 1) For the most part, the headers are all the same for all of the web-site pages. The only one that is different is the title of the specific page. 2) There is a need to guarantee that all of the pages have been developed and are present.

RESULTS: A separate sub-task (We already have a sub-task for the CSS file and each of the HTML files) which specifies the title and link address for each of the HTML pages. The results of this task will be stored in a post-office which can be accessed by the sub-tasks that processes the HTML files. Using the proper system of post-offices, the heading data can be passed to all of the HTML sub-tasks and each of the HTML files is defined by one and only one sub-task.

NEXT TASK: The next task will be to prepare the web-site project for this new sub-task.

FRIDAY: 2014/10/10

STATUS: As always, a battle-plan becomes obsolete with the firing of
the first shot. Building the sub-task that contains the names and
addresses of all of the HTML pages is not the next task. Header formats
need to be defined in CSS file. I selected some appropriate software
part names and found that I probably needed to update the software
parts for both the font family and color definitions.

DETAIL: Two font families were defined; one by the user for the
web-site body and the other, a generic font family, for the printed
version and the headers in both the screen and print CSS files.
Currently, I see no reason for creating a third font-family.

RESULTS: Easy access to the generic font family data will be needed in
the header software parts. To this end, I added two software parts, one
for the specified font and the other for the generic font, to write a
CSS font family statement into a specified file. These two software
parts have been prepared, integrated into the existing software parts
and successfully tested.

NEXT TASK: The next task will be to prepare an equivalent upgrade for
the color software parts.

FRIDAY: 2014/10/17

STATUS: Again as always, a battle-plan becomes obsolete with the firing of the first shot. The running of the CSS development task is quite slow; too slow to do a comprehensive test sequence with the test task.

DETAIL: As was reported earlier, I determined the primary reason for the slow speed was the use of the script system to reorder the preparation of the CSS files. I also determined that I was not using the scripts optimally. I made the modifications needed to improve its efficiency and now the development speed of the CSS files, although still slow, is acceptable. It will not be acceptable for a comprehensive test program in which all of the possible error conditions are properly tested.

RESULTS: The only easy way that I know to solve this process is to convert CSS Software parts library containing a large collection of software parts to a collection of small software parts libraries, each of which performs a limited function that can be quickly tested.

NEXT TASK: My first small software parts library that I plan to prepare will define and write the font families. You will recall that I recently made an improvement in this sub-function. A few more minor modifications and this sub-function will become a standalone library that will be accessed by the CSS Software parts library and comprehensively testable.

SATURDAY: 2014/10/25

STATUS: The development of the CSS font family library proceeded up to the process of integrating it with the existing CSS software parts library. A Programmable Software Development Environment system error was encountered associated with the Include file.

DETAIL: When I upgraded the Programmable Software Development Environment for the four versions (Experimental, Alpha, Beta, and Release versions}, I did not consider the Include file. I was not using these files at that time.

NEXT TASK: I plan to start upgrading the Programmable Software Development Environment to correct this problem and another error management problem recently discovered, This effort will be put on hold until this upgrade is completed.

DETAIL: When I upgraded the Programmable Software Development
Environment for the four versions (Experimental, Alpha, Beta, and
Release versions}, I did not consider the Include file. I was not
using these files at that time. The Include file is functional in the
Experimental version.

RESULTS: The slowness of the script software parts library has created
serious questions regarding the proper operation of the Programmable
Software Development Environment. The CSS Output software parts library
needs to be modified to prepare a visual output file generation
progress report.

NEXT TASK: The next task will be to make the needed modifications to

TUESDAY: 2015/01/06

STATUS: The slow behavior of the CSS Software Parts Library is not
acceptable. Providing a trace display will not truely solve the problem.

DETAIL: The script library is capable functioning in a great deal of
circumstances; hence, there is a considerable amount of excessing
processing baggage. It will probably be necessary to add a set of
script instructions to the Programmable Software Development
Environment at a future time.

RESULTS: The use of the script software parts library must be
eliminated.

DETAIL: The following five parts are being considered: _WEBSITE_HEADER_SIZE (Relative Font Siz), _WEBSITE_HEADER_COLOR (Font Color), _WEBSITE_HEADER_LEFT (Left Aligned Text), _WEBSITE_HEADER_CENTER (Center Aligned Text) and _WEBSITE_HEADER_RIGHT (Right Aligned Text). Each Header will be assigned an unique group.

MY NEXT TASK: My next task will be to start developing the Header Software Parts Library. Again, a common library will be used for both the CSS and HTML development tasks.

STATUS: It has been over six months since I have worked on this
project. I reviewed its status, tested all of the error statements in
the css color software parts library.

RESULTS: When testing the css color software parts library to verify
portability, I found that the LINUX execution was much faster the WIN32
execution. The Open Watcom C++ development system does not appear to
optimize the speed of the programs being developed.

NEXT TASK: My next task will be to develop the css header software
parts library. LINUX will be used for this effort. To improve the
performance of the WIN32 Programmable Software Development Environment
I will make the effort to find an alternate Open Source C++ development
system. This effort will be reported in another project.
